We are saddened to share the news of the passing of the Rev’d Canon Malory Makower, who died peacefully on 2 October 2025 at the age of 87, in Lowestoft, where he lived with his wife, Jackie. Malory was the first principal of ERMC (or, EAMTC, as it then was), which was formed out of the merger of the Ely Training Scheme with the Norwich Ordination Course. His vision was to to establish a ‘theological college without walls’ to train ordinands for the Dioceses of Ely, Norwich and St Edmundsbury & Ipswich as well as candidates of the Methodist Church. He held this position together with the parish of Lode, where he ran the course out of the spacious vicarage.
His visionary leadership of EAMTC was just one one facet of his long and fruitful ministry, which brought him to the Diocese of London, Ridley Hall in Cambridge, after EAMTC, to Great Yarmouth. Again, beside his ministry as parish priest he became involved in ministerial education and was instrumental in developing the local OLM course for Norwhich Diocese.
We will remember him for his vision and leadership. May he rest in peace and rise in glory!
